    The ONLY 'naked eye' window (strictly when the solar disc is 100% covered). Must be put back on immediately at the diamond ring.

  1. Filter Your Lens

    Tape eclipse glasses firmly over your camera lens before pointing at the Sun during partial phases. Make sure it lies completely flat to prevent glare.

  2. Lock Exposure

    Tap and hold on the Sun to lock focus on your screen, then slide down to darken the exposure (AE/AF Lock).

  3. Hold Still

    Brace against a wall, use a tripod, or set a 3-second timer. A Bluetooth remote prevents micro-shakes when tapping the screen.

  4. Burst on Totality

    Remove the filter ONLY during totality. Switch to burst mode the moment the corona appears (the Diamond Ring flash).

  5. Don’t Pinch-Zoom

    Avoid digital zoom. Stick only to your phone’s native optical zoom limits (3× or 5×) or shoot a wide-angle shot.

Mobility & Logistics

Navigating the path of totality

Millions of visitors are expected to travel into the path of totality. Spanish authorities will implement special traffic measures to manage the influx of vehicles. Planning your movement is as critical as checking the weather.

  1. Arrive 4 to 5 hours early to secure your sightline

    Because the Sun will be just a few degrees above the horizon during totality, you cannot simply pull over on the side of the road and look up. A distant hill, a tall building, or even a stand of trees to the west could completely block your view of the eclipse. You need those 4 to 5 hours not only to navigate rural road closures, but to physically walk around your chosen site and guarantee your horizon is flat and unobstructed. Spain also expects roughly 445,000 extra visitors for this event, so parking in small towns will vanish quickly.

  2. Wait out the post-eclipse exodus

    The moment the eclipse ends — which coincides closely with actual sunset in Spain — hundreds of thousands of people will simultaneously jump into their rental cars to drive back to the major cities. This creates legendary, hours-long gridlock on rural two-lane highways. Don’t join the mass exodus: pack a picnic dinner, bring a blanket, and plan to hang out at your observation site for at least two hours after the event while the roads clear.

  3. Keep an inland weather pivot ready (the Ebro Valley)

    Watching an eclipse from the northern Cantabrian coast (near A Coruña or Bilbao) sounds incredibly romantic, but that coast is green for a reason — historical weather data shows only a 30% to 50% chance of clear skies in August. If the morning forecast shows coastal fog or marine clouds rolling in, you must be packed and ready to drive south and inland toward the Castilian plains or the Ebro Valley (cities like Burgos or Zaragoza). The inland corridor bakes in the August heat, offering significantly higher odds of a crystal-clear sky.

The Coastal Origins

Bilbao
Coast

An excellent base on the northern coast, but its proximity to the Bay of Biscay means you must monitor the morning marine layer. If clouds threaten, two high-speed escape arteries lead inland.

Pivot to Burgos
158 km via the AP-68 and AP-1 — roughly 1 h 37 min under standard conditions.
Pivot to Zaragoza
303 km down the AP-68 — just under 3 hours normally, dropping you deep into the dry interior.
Santander
Coast

Sits right on the water and is beautifully positioned, but it is highly susceptible to fast-moving coastal fog — it needs a solid southern pivot plan.

Pivot to Burgos
178 km south into the mountains along the A-67 and N-627.
Travel time
Typically 1 h 52 min — a very viable morning escape route if you leave early enough to beat the traffic.
A Coruña
Coast

In the far northwest corner of Galicia. Escaping coastal weather from here takes a significantly longer commitment if you are aiming for the central plains.

Pivot to Burgos
A major 481 km drive heading southeast along the A-6 and A-231.
Travel time
4 h 42 min under normal conditions — you would need to commit to this backup before sunrise on eclipse day to avoid being caught on the highway during totality.

The Inland Sanctuaries

Burgos
Inland

The ideal primary backup for anyone fleeing the central-northern coast, with higher elevation and the protective rain shadow of the Cantabrian Mountains.

Climate advantage
The mountains block the moisture rolling off the Atlantic, providing substantially drier and clearer skies.
Accessibility
Centrally located along major highway junctions — the fastest safe haven to reach from the coast.
Zaragoza
Inland

The capital of Aragón and your ultimate fail-safe if the entire northern half of the country is blanketed in clouds.

Climate advantage
One of the driest, hottest cities in Spain during August — excellent odds of a completely clear view of the Sun.
Strategic value
A major hub on the AP-68, making it a straight, high-speed shot from the Basque coast.
Ebro Valley
River valley

The geographical depression that channels dry heat and creates sweeping, flat horizons ideal for a sunset eclipse.

Viewing conditions
No mountainous terrain immediately to the west, so you get a lower, clearer sightline as the Sun touches the horizon.
Mobility
The valley is vast, so you can easily reposition east or west along local roads if localized pop-up clouds appear.
